Volfas Brewery was founded in the middle of the XIX century by Rafailas Wolfas. The company is located in the suburbs of Kaunas, and already in 1853 it became one of the first industrial breweries in the Eastern Baltic region. By the end of the century, the predecessor of the Engelman brewery owned by Ferninand Engelman began work near the Carmelite church in Kaunas. In 1894, Rafailas' son, Iseras Beras Volfas, and his business partner Soloveicikas bought it out and joined it to their company, which changed its name to Volfas Engelman. The company's products have gained popularity far beyond Kaunas, receiving diplomas and medals at international exhibitions.
After the First World War and forced flight, the brewery owners returned to their native lands and rebuilt production. By 1927, they owned 11 breweries and occupied 40% of the Lithuanian froth market. During the Second World War, during the German occupation, the brewery was taken over by the troops and installed a new administration in it. After the end of hostilities, the company was nationalized by the USSR. In subsequent years, the company has repeatedly changed its name and specialization, producing various drinks. In 1994, the firm, then called “Ragutis”, was privatized and became a joint-stock company. The leading stake was owned by the Czech company Pilsner Urquell, which eventually sold it to A. Le Coq, a company owned by the Finnish company Olvi Group. The new leadership returned to the brewery its historical name and invested heavily in its development.
